The cerebellum shape of children with autism is different from ordinary people.

A new study from Columbia University shows that differences in the shape of the cerebellum may be related to autism spectrum disorders. Researchers published a paper in the journal Science Public Library·Comprehensive on the 11th that brain imaging analysis showed that the cerebellar surface structure of children with autism would be flatter.

The cerebellum contains 80% of the neurons in the human brain, but its volume accounts for only 10% of the total human brain. In the past, the cerebellum mainly controlled the motor function of human beings, but recent studies have shown that it also plays an important role in the implicit learning ability (the ability to extract basic rules without explicit instructions) and the sensory and cognitive functions.

Although the role of the cerebellum has been confirmed by more studies, in the brain imaging research related to autism, the attention to the cerebellum region is relatively small, and a large part of the reason is that the shape of the cerebellum is irregular and it is difficult to use the traditional Imaging techniques were analyzed. Although the brain has fewer neurons, its volume is larger than that of the cerebellum, which is more convenient for imaging research, and thus has become the focus of many autism-related brain imaging studies.

This time, researchers at Columbia University's Irving Medical Center focused on the cerebellum for the first time in autism-related brain imaging research. They selected 20 autistic boys between the ages of 6 and 12, and 18 control boys of similar age, similar language ability, and similar cerebellar volume, and performed high-resolution 3D fractal analysis of their cerebellar magnetic resonance imaging data. The fractal dimension of the outer cerebellum of these targets was measured. The results showed that the fractal dimension of the right cerebellar cortex of the autistic boys was significantly lower than that of the control group, indicating that the cerebellum had a flat surface structure. Because the right cerebellum is related to language processing ability, the researchers concluded that flat surface of the cerebellum may be a cause of communication impairment in autistic patients.

In addition, the researchers also found that the fractal dimension of the cerebellar cortex is also related to differences in children's cognitive and language skills, and these abilities are also affected by autism. In general, autistic boys with relatively strong social skills have a more normal cerebellar structure; autistic boys with non-linguistic abilities and language proficiency have relatively normal cerebellar structures.

Researchers say new research suggests that structural differences in the cerebellum may be related to autism, a finding that cautions that more attention should be paid to children's cerebellar developmental risks.
