U.S. genetically modified rice is unknown

Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that genetically modified long-grain rice was found in commercial rice samples, and that these contaminated rice may have entered the food supply market.

Bayer CropScience discovered the problem and reported it to the FDA and the USDA in July. Last week, the two agencies issued a statement at the same time. From the available information, this kind of rice has no effect on human health, food safety and the environment.

USDA said that biotechnology products are not uncommon in the United States. Since 1987, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Plant Health and Quarantine Center has released controls on more than 70 genetically modified crops. Over the past decade, farmers have grown more and more biological products to combat herbicides, pests and improve crop quality. According to USDA's forecast, 61% of corn in the United States in 2006, 89% of soybeans and 81% of cotton are biotech crops.

Mike Johanns, Secretary-General of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said the contaminated rice came from the 2005 crop, but he could not determine the origin of the 2005 crop. The extent to which this pollution has spread to non-GM crops is unknown to Mike Johanns, and it is not known whether these products have already entered supermarkets.

Mike Adams, a consumer health attorney, said that this means that authorities that should have had a clear understanding of the issue are powerless to do so. Where and how could these crops, which may pose an inexplicable threat to our food supply, be contaminated? There is no clear statement. And rice does not seem to be the only product that has been contaminated, but authorities have tried to cover up the seriousness of the problem.

The USDA said that it will organize investigations into the causes of rice contamination, and immediately notify foreign trading partners that their purchases account for 80% of US exports of rice, worth approximately US$1.88 billion.
