The joint research and development team of Japan's Information and Communications Research Institute (NICT) and Fujitsu announced on September 9, 2016 that their medical field multilingual speech translation system was officially entered into the application experiment phase.

In fact, since October 2015, the University of Tokyo and NICT have started clinical trials for multilingual translation. This time, Fujitsu participated in relevant trials in the form of a midway join, and will conduct practical application surveys for foreign patients and medical personnel. .

Based on the existing multi-language speech translation software "VoiceTra" technology, NICT has improved the vocabulary of professional terms in the medical field, increased the number of medical dialogue modes, and upgraded the system with higher accuracy of speech recognition and machine translation.

On the other hand, Fujitsu has developed a technology that can distinguish the user's voice and accurately determine the starting point of the translated language in an environment where the surrounding noise is large and the vocal periodicity is strong. In addition, the terminal microphone of the system can judge the position of the speaker by voice, and when the conversation is performed by people using different languages, the system can automatically switch the translation mode (such as Chinese-Japanese, Japanese-Chinese) without setting multiple times.

Through this application experiment, NICT and Fujitsu plan to confirm the effectiveness of the translation system at the medical site, and collect more dialogue data and models to further optimize the system.
