Ducks appear variant avian influenza virus subtype

In response to the bird flu epidemic, China launched a new chicken vaccine in September 2017. Recently, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences found that the vaccine was effective, but it is worth noting that the researchers found two new genetic variants of H7N9 and H7N2 in unimmunized ducks. Related papers were published in Cell-Host and Microorganisms.

The main author of the paper, Chen Hualan, an animal virologist at the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, pointed out that, unexpectedly, this new highly pathogenic subtype was produced in ducks and was well adapted. The highly pathogenic H7N9 has very limited ability to replicate in ducks.

The Chen Hualan team collected genetic samples of 37,928 chickens and 15,956 ducks 8 months before and 5 months after vaccination. As a result, 304 H7N9 viruses were isolated before the vaccine injection, and only 17 H7N9 viruses and 1 were isolated. H7N2 virus.

The researchers said the data showed that chicken vaccination successfully prevented the spread of the H7N9 virus. However, avian influenza viruses can replicate in host cells and often undergo mutations and recombination. When the team carefully observed the gene type of the duck-borne strain, it was found that the H7N9 and H7N2 viruses acquired certain gene fragments from other duck influenza viruses, increasing their ability to infect ducks.

According to statistics, Chinese consumers eat about 3 billion ducks a year. To prevent further human infection, the researchers believe that the virus should be eliminated in ducks as soon as possible. Fortunately, Chen Hualan said, the study shows that the current vaccine will also be effective for ducks, so it is recommended to immediately inject H7 vaccine into ducks.
