Can Apple's feast of mobile medicine be tasted?
WWDC, the full name of the "Apple World Developers Conference", is a grand event for Apple's global developers. This year's WWDC15 attracted 5,000 people from around the world for a week. The conference starts with developer functions and discusses five aspects of multimedia, image and game processing, system architecture, application architecture, design and deployment. It must be said that the WWDC every June is a feast for developers and a huge stage for Apple to showcase the latest technology. What is special about WWDC15 this year is that Apple's two major functions in the health field are mentioned again – its HealthKit and ResearchKit. So what can we do for mobile healthcare ? Has Apple created new opportunities or destroyed what? Through several sessions of Keynote, HealthKit, ResearchKit and Watch, I made some of the following summary: Keynote: From the beginning of 2010 to see the feeling of WWDC, I think the biggest highlight of this year is - intelligence. Whether it's Craig's high-profile search for "documents processed last week" on OSX, or Siri's schedule reminder, until later Apple's personalized recommendations, it is a deep impression on this point. So what about medical health? IBM's "failure" on Watson is not without its use. At least it proves that computers in the medical field can't replace humans to complete systemic decision-making tasks, but it can help people to help decision-making. In my visit, about computing intelligence, some companies are still doing overseas, such as Flatiron Health, which is invested in standardization and data analysis of cancer data by Google Investment to help diagnose cancer. Of course, many domestic Internet companies are also engaged in such things, but the current results are still very limited. Take the data mentioned in the 2014 China Internet Financing Report as an example. Of all the incomplete statistics, only one of the total $1.4 billion in medical investments is a big data analysis company. Of course, this is not to say that other types of companies do not do intelligence, but according to what I have heard, it is rare. More companies are just playing with concepts, just talk about it. HealthKit and ResearchKit: Regarding this WWDC, Apple's two speeches at HealthKit and ResearchKit are remarkable. As two iOS eco-modules with medical breakthroughs, the former is more inclined to the public health management part, and the latter is biased towards medical research. Regarding the public health section, iOS hopes to create a complete set of data service systems related to personal health information, showing more abundant data to people from all levels. The past HealthKit data indicators cover five major modules: physical measurement, fitness, medical indicators, nutritional sleep, and core vital signs. In addition to drinking water, UV, but also an important reproductive module, focusing on women's health, including basal body temperature, vaginal discharge, ovulation. This is indeed a big field. In China, in the past, "big bangs" and "beauty pomelo" have been cultivated here. It can be seen that based on the data type (data indicator item), HealthKit is getting closer and closer through the data link to describe people's aspects. However, the development of HealthKit is not very beneficial for medical Internet practitioners. The important reason is that Apple has imposed strict restrictions on the use of HealthKit. Especially in the use of data, the iOS system basically takes the data as its own. This is completely unacceptable for data-centric applications. The development of many application services has lost a lot of imagination. It can be said that without the data, the intelligence mentioned above is difficult to establish. Of course, from another perspective, this is also a development model for the Internet to the Internet of Things. HealthKit's biggest beneficiaries are smart hardware manufacturers, no need to spend heavy software development costs, focus their work more on hardware manufacturing, and create external devices that are more in line with people's habits. In fact, not only Apple's iOS, medical care as the world's largest capital market, the annual hardware cost is quite high. The development of soft and hard combination has enabled companies in this field to have more cooperation and complementarity. For example, in the field of heart disease, real-time monitoring of ECG has been widely recognized as a reasonable diagnostic method. Reasonably and quickly returning the data to the doctor's information terminal will greatly facilitate the doctor's diagnosis and treatment. Regarding the medical research part, I deeply believe that this is one of the greatest value of mobile Internet for medical creation. Expanding medical research from a limited number of people to a wider Internet population; subjective questionnaires centered on questionnaires become objective data that can be continuously collected; giving participants more feedback. These summaries are a subtle description of the value of mobile healthcare. As an example of follow-up, many people think that follow-up is a chat, which is an instant message between a doctor and a patient. In fact, follow-up is the most important means for doctors to follow up on patients. Through continuous follow-up of the patient, the doctor adjusts the medication and dose through data indicators. Its important role is clearly written in medical textbooks. So mobile medical treatment needs to solve, of course, not how to let doctors and patients chat, but how to let doctors help patients to make medical adjustments in the most effective way. This is actually a kind of research. Apple's iOS system does do a very systematic effort in this area, including proactive activities (such as questionnaires), passive activities (sensors collect data), informed consent, and display panels. This aspect is very worthwhile for peer-to-peer mobile medical students to learn. At the same time, Apple also put forward a fairly clear reference in the four directions of "medical and software cooperation", "form processing", "data security" and "participant rights".
