May slow down and shrink tumors through implantable chemotherapy devices

In an article published in Biomaterials, the researchers described how they developed and tested their innovative devices.

May slow down and shrink tumors through implantable chemotherapy devices

The device is a soft film that can be loaded into a thin tube and inserted into a catheter. Once implanted in the pancreas, the film can stretch out depending on the shape of the tumor.

The drug embedded in the film is released within a predetermined time. This film is designed such that the drug can only be released from the side in contact with the tumor to reduce side effects on adjacent organs.

One of the lead authors of the paper, Dr. Laura Indolfi from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA, said the device has great potential for localized treatment of pancreatic cancer at the tumor site. She pointed out:

“You can implant our device to achieve a limited release of the drug to control the progression of the tumor, and it is possible to reduce the size of the tumor to meet the requirements for surgical resection.”

Pancreatic cancer is one of the third leading causes of cancer death in the United States and its survival rate is extremely low. One of the reasons is that it is difficult for chemotherapy drugs to enter the pancreas because the pancreas is located deep in the abdominal cavity.

Injection chemotherapy drugs often end in failure because the number of blood vessels that can enter the pancreatic tumor is small, and they are often surrounded by a thick, fibrous envelope, which makes drug treatment impossible.
