From 14 years old anti-sugar to creating artificial pancreas: diabetes management has changed life

Diabetes is a chronic disease that cannot be cured, and every patient needs constant attention. Nowadays, artificial pancreas begins to enter the daily life of diabetic patients, reducing the burden on diabetic patients and enabling them to lead a normal life. This article interviews the artificial pancreas inventor Dana Lewis to fully understand the information of the artificial pancreas, the author compiled the content.

With the maturity of sensor technology, diabetes management has entered a period of rapid development. In traditional diabetic patients, insulin pumps and monitors are commonly used to monitor blood glucose levels. If the blood sugar level is too low or too high, it will send an alert. However, these alerts are often inefficient. For example, they can't wake up diabetics at night to correct their blood sugar levels in a timely manner, and many people with diabetes lose their lives.

This is why people with diabetes have been looking forward to "artificial pancreas" to save their lives. The artificial pancreas is a closed loop system. It continuously measures blood sugar levels and is able to adjust insulin and glucagon to normal levels at the right time. Therefore, patients with chronic diseases who use "artificial pancreas" can sleep well.

From 14 years old anti-sugar to creating artificial pancreas: diabetes management has changed life

How does technology make it easier for people with diabetes to manage their lives in a sustainable way? Dana Lewis is a real case. She was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 14. As a digital health analyst, Dana Lewis and her husband Scott Leibrand, a former Twitter engineer and computer network expert, decided to challenge the existing technology and create an "artificial pancreas". Manage diabetes.

Their DIY "artificial pancreas" works very well! So they started thinking about how to spread their experience and hope that more patients will benefit from it. However, it is too difficult to get products into the market. It is necessary to complete clinical trials in accordance with the law and obtain FDA approval, so the traditional commercialization process requires a long wait. As a result, they established an open source community to provide technical support and assistance to those interested in creating DIY “artificial pancreas”. In addition, create a twitter account to record the efforts of the community to make life easier for people with diabetes.

We were very interested in Dana Lewis's experience and discussed with her how artificial pancreas can change the lives of people with diabetes.

How do you think about doing this job?

Dana Lewis: An insulin pump and CGM data are integrated into the artificial pancreas to automatically regulate blood sugar and manage changes in blood sugar levels. At first I didn't want to create an artificial pancreas system. I just didn't want to hear a reminder on my CGM (Dynamic Blood Glucose Monitoring) and wanted to solve this problem. So, I get the data from my CGM device and send it to my phone or computer so I can replace the existing medical device to alert me.

After completing the collection of the database, I need to build a prediction algorithm based on the data to make the alarm system more intelligent. Because we don't like this alarm sound to wake us up from sleep, reminding us to regulate blood sugar. One year later, our algorithm program can send commands to the insulin pump, which can be automatically adjusted without waking up.

I don't want to be the only person with an artificial pancreas. I like to share it with others. If through normal channels: obtaining legal approval, clinical trials, marketing, and completing such a process, other diabetic patients will have to see the product in the market long after. This is why we are looking for an open source diabetes community to create OpenAPS, share our methods, data, and systems so that everyone can build their own artificial pancreas using their diabetes medical devices.
