Hydrogen peroxide vapor sterilization (HPV) is effective against MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome)

Bioquell provides effective solutions and educational cases for the first case in the United States

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has been in the Middle East a few years ago and is now reported in many parts of the world. In the first case of the United States, the United States was able to control it before it was widely disseminated by finding effective solutions. The automated room disinfection system using hydrogen peroxide vapor supplied by Bioquell has proven to be an effective method for combating MERS-CoV.

MERS-CoV is most likely transmitted through contact and droplets or secretions. Therefore, rooms that have been used to care for patients must be strictly disinfected and treated with care. Scientists at the University of Minnesota recently collaborated with Bioquell to demonstrate that hydrogen peroxide vapor is effective against transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus (TGEV). TGEV is closely related to SARS and MERS human coronavirus and can therefore be used for surrogate testing. The TGEV was placed on a dry surface and exposed to hydrogen peroxide vapor, and after a sterilization process that was reduced by greater than 4-log viral organism survival, the results indicated that no TGEV survived. This study demonstrates that the Bioquell automated room disinfection system is a viable terminal disinfection solution for clinical areas that care for TGEV patients.

For the growing epidemic, Biosell Global Health CEO James Salkeld said: "We are aware of the global focus on MERS-CoV, and we believe that Bioquell technology can effectively help spread the spread of disease."

The educational importance of health care workers in the development of an emerging disease remains the focus of Bioquell's work. A 30-minute MERS-CoV-themed webinar hosted by Bioquell Technology Director Dr. Jon Otter on May 15, 2015 brought very useful knowledge to the participating health professionals. Whether it is MERS-CoV or other hospital-related infections such as MRSA, VRE, CRE, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, C. difficile, etc., Dr. Otter is still an industry expert. If you have any questions, please contact Jason Merrill at jason.
