Narrow malignancy: RNA-targeted therapy needs to be inserted in the field of molecular diagnostics

Twenty years ago, scientists discovered that short-chain RNA, or microRNA, can help cells fine-tune the expression of genes. When the cells collapse or lose a part of the microRNA, it is possible to express a disorder, and it is possible to cure the tumor by increasing the level of the microRNA.

To achieve cancer treatment in this way, the biggest problem is how to deliver microRNA to the tumor. Recently, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced a new study that can successfully deliver microRNAs into tumor cells. By twisting the RNA segment into a triple helix and embedding it in a biocompatible gel, not only can the efficient delivery of the segment be achieved, but also the use of these RNAs to shrink malignant tumors in mice.

Topical treatment: can achieve results for fixed tumors

Simultaneous activation of a tumor-inhibiting microRNA and an oncogenic microRNA led to confusion in the expression of cancer cells. Using such techniques, researchers have greatly improved the survival rate of cancer. They believe that such methods can be used not only to deliver other types of RNA, but also to deliver DNA and other therapeutic molecules.

"This platform can deliver any gene you want to deliver," said Natalie Artzi, an assistant professor at Brigham Women's Hospital, a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Institute of Medical Engineering and Science. “Research has demonstrated the feasibility of local treatment of cancer. Especially when it comes to gene diagnosis and treatment, the triple helix structure makes the structure of RNA more stable, while improving absorption and transfection efficiency.”

This new technology reflects in cancer research: moving toward design is more targeted and selective. Artzi also added. "Cancer is considered a systemic disease that requires systemic treatment. However, in some cases, fixed cancer cells can be treated with local treatments such as gene therapy and chemotherapy."
