Valery Spiridonov, a 30-year-old computer engineer in Russia, recently planned to move his head.

Due to hereditary genetic diseases, Spiridov was in a state of paralysis below his neck. He was not willing to spend his whole life in a wheelchair and decided to accept the world's first head transplant.

The operation is scheduled to take place in the UK next year, and Dr. Sergio Canavaro, who is also the initiator of the technology.

During the surgery, the doctor will "freeze" Spirinov's head to prevent brain cell death, and the catheter provides support for critical arteries and veins.

The doctor will then cut off the spinal cord that is connected to his brain. After repairing the spinal cord, it is fused with the donor (provided by the donor) and the two parts of the skin are stitched together.

A special knife is used to cut the spinal cord during surgery. Developed by Prof. Farid Amirouche of the University of Illinois, the blade is capable of accurately cutting micrometers (millionths of a meter), minimizing the effects on nerves.
