US antitrust authorities approve Abbott’s acquisition of St. Jude Medical
On Tuesday, the US Federal Trade Commission said the US antitrust agency approved the health care company Abbott Laboratories (ABT) to acquire medical device manufacturer St. Jude Medical (STJ) for $25 billion. Abbott agreed to revoke two medical devices for cardiovascular surgery to address the concerns of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which the FTC committee said in a statement would be a competition. Abbott spokesman Elissa Maurer said in an e-mail: "We will continue to work hard to obtain final regulatory approval and are expected to be completed by the end of this year. Abbott will sell St. Jude Medical's vascular closure device and Abbott's steerable sheath to Japan's Terumo Corporation (4543.T). In October, Abbott said that these companies will sell some medical equipment business to Terumo for about $1.12 billion as a step in completing the transaction.
