DeepMind and NHS reach a five-year medical plan: the prospects are good, privacy issues are worrying

DeepMind has formally entered into a five-year partnership with the UK National Health Service NHS. As part of the collaboration, NHS's three largest hospitals, Royal Free, Barnet and Chase Farm, have agreed to share medical data for 1.6 million patients with DeepMind.

DeepMind will use this data to develop a mobile app called "Streams" that claims it can save 10,000 lives a year. “Streams” contains patient test results, medical records and provides instant messaging services.

Deepmind plans to release "Streams" in 2017, along with a patient health risk warning system to warn patients with acute kidney disease and blood poisoning risks. The system will be integrated into “Streams,” where doctors and nurses can receive warnings about patient health risks on the phone in “significant news”.

Doctors at the Royal Free Hospital say working with Google's DeepMind can help the hospital reduce millions of hours of paperwork each year – the time saved will be spent on treating patients.

When “Streams” was released, health care workers no longer needed to dig through paper inspection reports. They can view all of the patient's medical data, including blood test results, on the app. If any of the assay items are not working properly, the app will immediately push a warning.
