CaringThings, a health care startup based in Ohio, USA, introduced a smart thermometer that plugs directly into the headphone jack of a smartphone. The thermometer is about the size of a headset. Tympani is an infrared ear thermometer. It can read the temperature of the eardrum, as well as the temperature of the liquid and the surface of the object, and then convert the temperature reading into an audio signal that is read by your smartphone. The soft rubber head of this device prevents it from getting too deep into the ear. Tympani can take readings in 2 seconds, which is convenient for parents who are sick. With a companion app (iOS or Android), Tympani lets you record changes in body temperature, track symptoms or enter detailed notes into your health log. You can also safely share your records with your doctor or virtual doctor. The Tympani Smart Thermometer is a CE-certified Class 2 medical device . The company expects FDA approval in November 2015.
